Nicole P. is a Registered Practical Nurse in Endoscopy. Caring for others isn’t just a passion—it’s a part of her family’s legacy. With generations of women in healthcare before her, Nicole’s commitment to helping others is an integral part of her identity.
Nicole began her career at CMH in the Emergency Department, where she gained invaluable experience working with patients in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Now, working in Endoscopy, she continues to find fulfillment in making a difference for her patients.
“It makes me feel proud to know that I made someone’s experience in hospital better,” she shares, finding fulfillment in the positive impact she has—especially in an environment that can often feel stressful and intimidating.
Nicole finds joy in the big smiles she receives from patients who share her ethnic background. They are pleasantly surprised to have a care provider who reflects their identity and often feel an immediate connection. For Nicole, moments like these reinforce the importance of diversity in healthcare – it fosters trust and improves communication, helping reduce health disparities and leading to better health outcomes.
Nicole, reflecting on Black History Month, says even though it’s been around for years, “there’s always more to discover.” She feels it is important to learn about everything – including challenging and controversial topics. “Going through uncomfortable moments is what helps us grow.”
In her learning journey, Nicole has come to value the importance of asking questions. “I want my peers to know that they can feel comfortable asking me questions.” She encourages others to come from a place of learning and ask questions respectfully, adding: “I’d much rather you ask, than make assumptions.”
At CMH, Nicole encourages others to learn more about other groups. She emphasizes that you may find yourself pleasantly surprised at what you discover!
Thank you to Nicole for sharing her story.
