Diagnostic mammography is performed to diagnose diseases of the breast. It is captured using ionizing radiation and is a routine exam performed at CMH. A mammogram is a digital X-ray of breast tissue. It provides physicians information about lumps, calcifications and other abnormalities that may be present in the breast. They are also used to screen for breast cancer.

A requisition for a diagnostic mammogram from either a physician or an Extended Class Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) is required. Mammograms are performed Tuesday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. To book, call (519) 621-2333 ext. 4980.

It is recommended to schedule your appointment about two weeks after your period has ended.

CMH is proud to be designated as an Ontario Breast Screening Program site, one of three in the Regions of Waterloo Wellington. With this designation, CMH provides timely, high-quality diagnosis and follow-up for people with abnormal screens. Learn more about the OBSP at CMH.

Please arrive at 15 minutes before your appointment time. If you are late, your appointment may be rescheduled. After you check in at Patient Registration, proceed down Wing A, Level 1 past the elevators to the Diagnostic Imaging Registration to check-in for your appointment.

Before the procedure, let the technologist know if you are pregnant or might be pregnant, have any implanted devices like a pacemaker or port, have any shoulder or other mobility issues, or have any skin conditions. Bring your health card. It is recommended that you leave any valuables at home. Wear comfortable, loose fitting two-piece clothes.

You may be asked to undress from the waist up or wear a hospital gown for the exam. The length of your appointment may vary, depending on the complexity of the exam. Any pre-operative needle localizations or biopsies may range from 45-60 minutes. Some will require you to stay for 15 minutes after for observation.

Mammogram results are shared with your care provider within 10 days. If you had a biopsy, this may delay the process of results; we will give you instructions on how to care for yourself after the biopsy.

In some cases, follow up imaging of the breast may be requested by the radiologist. If this is required, your care providers will let you know.
