Our Mental Health Program serves residents of Cambridge and North Dumfries, providing trauma informed and recovery oriented care to individuals with mental health concerns.

We work in partnership with community agencies, primary care providers, schools, and social service agencies. We provide time limited services to individuals experiencing acute, moderate to severe mental health concerns.

What to expect when visiting the Emergency Department (ED):

When you arrive in the Emergency Department (ED) for a mental health concern, you will be seen by an triage nurse. You may be referred to a Psychiatric Assessment and Admission Nurse (PAAN) for further assessment. PAAN will complete a mental health crisis assessment and will consult with emergency physicians and the psychiatrist.

Children and adolescents under 18 years of age will follow the same process as noted above. Since CMH does not have a Child and Adolescent Inpatient unit, if an inpatient admission is required, a referral will be sent to partnering hospitals. Children and adolescents will remain in the ED until a bed is available.

Please bring any personal assistive devices that you require for your appointment. For example, any communication or mobility device you many need like a walker, hearing aid, etc.

Kindly note that CMH has a no scent policy.  Please refrain from using or wearing perfumes, scented deodorants and scented products before coming to hospital.

Psychiatric Assessment and Admission Nurse (PAAN)

Our Psychiatric Assessment and Admission Nurse (PAAN) service, available 24/7, is offered in the Emergency Department (ED) by skilled and experienced Mental Health Registered Nurses. PAAN offers assessment, crisis management and treatment recommendations in consultation with emergency room doctors, psychiatrists, and other healthcare partners.

The wait times ED to see a PAAN will vary based on your triage assessment and department acuity.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

ECT is a procedure that is used to treat specific mental health conditions, such as severe depression. ECT treatment at CMH is typically delivered 3 times per week for up to 14 treatments. Patients undergoing ECT can complete their treatment on an Inpatient or Outpatient basis, which is determined in collaboration with the psychiatrist, patient and the rest of the care team.

How to Refer to ECT: Here24/7 Cambridge Referral Forms (must be completed by a physician).
